Someone (I can't remember who you were, but possibly a reviewer who may have mentioned this in passing) sent me to search out and get The Wall, a 1968 book by the Austrian writer Marlen Haushofer, which has been reprinted, thanks no doubt to the 2013 German film Die Wand, which, by all accounts is as sensitive, thought provoking and disturbing as Haushofer's original book.

Who's Involved: Based on Marlen Haushofer’s eponymous classic novel, The Wall is both a riveting tale of survival and a gorgeous meditation that raises profound questions about humanity and our relationship to the natural world. Based on Marlen Haushofer’s best-selling eponymous novel from the 1960s, the film is a highly original exploration of the experience of solitude and survival. Gedeck plays an unnamed Austrian woman who goes to a secluded Alpine hunting lodge with her cousin and the latter's husband who, shortly after their arrival, decide to visit the nearest village.
