EC cells are small polygonal cells located in the crypts between intestinal villi. They are discriminated from other cells of the gastrointestinal epithelial crypts by the presence of basally located granulations that contain serotonin and other peptides. The ECL cells are located in the basal part of the gastric pits in the vicinity of parietal cells (Fujiwara et al., 1999) and comprise approximately 40%–50% of all human gastric endocrine cells (Solcia et al., 2000). ECL cells were located near the basement membranes in the gastric oxyntic region, and were in contact with both chief cells and parietal cells in the same glandular epithelium. The ratio of ECL cells in contact with chief cells was clearly greater than that in contact with parietal cells.

Parietal cells are present in glands within the fundus and body of the stomach and are the largest cells in these glands. They originate from immature progenitor cells in the gland isthmus and then migrate upward toward the pit region and downward toward the base of the gland. ECL cells are endocrine/paracrine cells located in the acid-producing part of the stomach.

Adenosine analogs modulate chloride secretion in gastric glands and activate acid secretion in isolated parietal cells through A2B adenosine receptor (A2BR) binding. A functional link ECL cells are histamine‐containing endocrine/paracrine cells in the oxyntic mucosa of the stomach. They play a key role in the control of acid secretion because of their ability to secrete histamine, which stimulates adjacent acid‐producing cells (for reviews see Håkanson et al. 1994, 1998).

They produce histamine, chromogranin A/pancreastatin and an as yet unidentified peptide hormone. They respond to gastrin by the release of secretory products; more long-term responses include adaptation to the gastrin stimulus, hypertrophy and hyperplasia. This histamine is produced by and released from the enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cell which accordingly has a key-regulatory role in the oxyntic mucosa.

Cells were plated (Poly-D-Lysine coated, BD Biocoat #356663) the day before experiment at the density of 25000 cells/well (20 µl/well) in the same medium. The software was initially named ECL (Electronic Cell Laboratory), and was later given the current name ‘E-Cell System’, or ‘Electronic Cell System’, by Kenta Hashimoto, a senior in the lab. In December 29th, Takahashi made an internal release of an alpha version (version 0.0-pre) of the software to lab members. The technical team here at the ECL Group has wide ranging expertise in all aspects of technology design and documentation.
