Traveller-photographer Pentti Sammallahti captures the mysteries of nature on his travels and among these, the world of birds. Coastlines, swamps, parks, endless plains, forest clearings, snowy landscapes… In these isolated areas, birds slyly reveal their presence.

The first exhibition is dedicated to the Finnish photographer Pentti Sammallahti. Pentti Sammallahti is a benchmark figure in contemporary Finnish photography. His works depict nature eroded and broken down by civilization, but he does not put man and the environm Pentti Sammallahti, one of Finland’s most recognized artists, is more than a photographer: he is a craftsman, a poet, a traveler, and a master-observer. Sammallahti represents an alternative to the frenetic rhythms of contemporary life and to the adulation of rapid change. Apart from being a world-travelling photographer, Sammallahti is an immortaliser of his home city of Helsinki. Sammallahti is recognized as a master craftsman both in terms of his photographic eye and his expertise in photographic and mechanical printing methods. He has designed and printed many small photobooks throughout his career, each a work of art in itself.

Whether taken in Turkey, India, or Italy, the photographs of Pentti Sammallahti are imbued with the cool northern darkness of his native Finland. The artist started taking photographs at age 11, inspired by his grandmother Hildur Larsson, a Swedish-born newspaper photographer. Pentti Sammallahti was born on 29 April 1950 in Helsinki, Finland. Growing up, he was surrounded by the works of his grandmother, Hildur Larsson (1882-1952), a Swedish-born photographer, who worked for the Helsinki newspaper Kaiku in the early 1900s.
