Olympe de Gouges is considered as one of the first feminists. In other writings she attacked slavery and the death penalty, and argued in favour of divorce.
She began her career as a playwright in the early 1780s. As political tension rose in France, Olympe de Gouges became increasingly politically engaged. She became an outspoken advocate against the slave trade in the French colonies in 1788. At the same time, she began writing political pamphlets. The French revolution failed in many ways, but its inability to recognize the equality of women with men was one of its most crucial failures. The most famous line of Olympe de Gouges’s Déclaration was in her Article Ten: since under French law women were fully punishable, yet denied equal rights, she declared ‘If women have the right to mount the scaffold, they must also have the right to mount the speaker’s rostrum’ (la femme a le droit de monter sur l’échafaud; elle doit avoir également celui de monter à la Tribune).
